How to overcome negative thinking
July 12, 2010

Optimism improves our social life and motivates us to never give up, which turns failures and setbacks into comebacks and successes. Our thinking habits can make our life a heaven or hell.

Thoughts, emotions and behaviours intertwine very closely and each can impact the other elements. Both our positive and negative thoughts make quite an impact on our expectation by affecting how we envision things and act. Negative thinking, is a sign of pessimism, and may lead you to lose confidence in yourself and give up your efforts. On the contrary, optimism infuses zeal in making your dreams come true. However, our mental patterns are such that somewhere it harbours negative thoughts, especially when we are in a bad mood or depressed.

Negative thinking in any aspect, be it professional or personal, restricts our productivity. It causes depression and annoyance and in such a situation, nobody is able to understand the other's point of view. Harbouring negative thoughts invites various adverse effects, which are outlined as follows:

A downward spiral

Negative thinking always takes a person in a downward spiral. It hampers a person's mental state, gives rise to anger, frustration, irritability and anxiety, all of which lead to more negative thoughts and lower the person's morale.

Physical effects

A person who is in an extremely negative emotional state may be prone to various physical disorders. These include persistent mental tension, abnormal heartbeats or abnormal respiration, fluctuating body temperature and irregular working of pituitary glands etc., Negative thinking also blocks impulses from being properly transmitted between the central-nervous system and the brain. When a person's brain cannot interpret impulses correctly, it affects the functioning of his brain and body. Gradually, he faces problems in remembering things, resulting in missed appointments and misunderstandings with others.

Sleeping problems

Negative thinking leads to lack of sleep. We often think of our worries right before sleeping, which is not the time to think such things. It is best to concentrate more on positive thoughts at the time of retiring for the night.

Closing the door to improvement

While in a state of despair, we generally miss opportunities that would help us to overcome our problems and better our way of life. Perhaps we deliberately get involved in situations that encourage negative thinking due to the fear of inviting more problems. Therefore, everything seems to be continuously going wrong.

Negative impression

It is important to consider what impression you may leave on others because of your negative thinking. You may get your answer by recalling your reaction when you meet a relative, a friend or a colleague, suffering from gloominess and you dislike his companionship.  So, your negative thinking not only affects your mind and body but also your impression.

It is quite clear that negative thinking renders a person incapable of discovering his own competence. To cope up with such a situation, you must try to inculcate positive feelings and accept challenges with a positive outlook. The foremost thing you need to do is to believe in yourself. Try to look at the brighter part of a particular situation and don't let negative thinking distort your vision. Listen to music, spend leisure time watching a funny movie or playing a sport or catching up with old friends when negativity surrounds you.,  Meditation is a  great way to usher positivity in your life.
