Speech by Hon'ble Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Mr. A. Raja
(Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, 30th June 2009)
Today is a momentous day for IndianOil and India.

We are commemorating the Golden Jubilee of IndianOil with the release of a special postage stamp by Her Excellency the Hon’ble President of India.

Postage stamps, as we all know, are a token of receipt of postage, but they have one more very important role as “cultural ambassadors”. By bringing out commemorative postage stamps, the Department is committed to nurture the historical and cultural heritage of a nation. The stamps brought out serve the purpose not only of bringing revenue to the Department but also add to our knowledge and generate awareness about people, events and institutions.

Today we are going to issue a commemorative postage stamp acknowledging the services of IndianOil to the nation and its people. The design depicts the Company’s commitment and dedication to the national objective of self-sufficiency in energy sector, especially in oil refining and marketing.

The petrol & diesel station is the public face of IndianOil, which is very familiar to us. But behind it, in the background, is a complex chain of operations and business processes that begin with crude oil processing at the refineries, its transportation by pipelines, rail and roadways to far flung and remote areas for usage of general public. The stamp has been designed keeping this in mind.

IndianOil is a symbol of the commanding heights envisaged for the public sector. Apart from its pervading presence in India, it has imprinted its footprints abroad and set many benchmarks for other corporates. In this sense, IndianOil inspires the innate pride of every Indian as a truly national company with international credentials.

The greatest challenge facing the nations today is to plan and provide for their rapidly expanding energy needs in a cost effective and environment-friendly manner. This is because of the critical role played by energy and energy infrastructure in shaping economies. For India too, availability of energy resources, especially oil & gas, at affordable prices is critical for sustained and sustainable growth.

There is no doubt that IndianOil has made a significant contribution to the nation’s economy in this direction since its inception in 1959. I am happy to learn that even in these times of economic slowdown, the Corporation is going ahead with mega projects that are critical to meet the growing demand for petroleum products in our country.

IndianOil today is marching towards its goal of becoming a globally admired energy major and a world-class technology provider. Apart from widening its business horizons, it has achieved synergy with its subsidiaries and joint ventures, handling large-scale acquisitions and mergers very competently.

I, therefore, wish IndianOil and its people a bright future and hope that they will continue to contribute to the socio-economic development of the nation on a larger scale than ever before.

In conclusion, I am very happy to be a part of the well-deserved recognition being conferred on IndianOil in the form of a commemorative postage stamp during its Golden Jubilee year.

And I once again express my profound gratitude to Her Excellency, the President of India, for gracing the occasion and would now request her to release the special stamp and the first-day cover.

Thank you.

Jai Hind.
